Kleine Zalze Brut nv
Here we have a truly brilliant expression of Méthode Cap Classique a wine made in the same way as true Champagne. Using the noble Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes the wine is second fermented in the bottle you buy it in. The Chardonnay gives the wine its elegance and stature while the Pinot Noir gives the fruit intensity. In the glass, a pale golden straw in colour, with a mass of the tiniest bubbles rushing to the top. Classical MCC.
Malkopbaai Sauvignon Blanc 2016
I first tasted this at Paternoster, up on the West Coast. With fish and seafood. What a revelation and such good value, not easy to find. Real quaffer with early picked green peppers and West Coast fynbos herb, and then the later picked tropical notes. Crisp starfruit and kiwi. Crisp, yet soft refresher, you just want to go on drinking it.
Chenin Blanc 2017
Cederberg Wines come from the highest altitude vineyards in the Cape. Clear water, cold climate and disease-free vineyards producing award winning wines by David Nieuwoudt, who is a fifth-generation winemaker on his family owned estate. Uniquely Cederberg, this wine has had four months on the lees building a creamy and full mid palate. Wonderful fat melon flavours, sliced ripe pear and pink grapefruit and a fabulous full and deeply satisfying tail.
Reyneke Organic White 2017
Reyneke Wines come from a farm in the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation which is biodynamically farmed by Johan Reyneke, a passionate gentle surfing winemaker. The 92% Sauvignon Blanc and the Semillon are separately vinified for later blending. All the wonderful Sauvignon flavours, sweet tropical lime skins, white flowers grapefruit juice. Semillon adding its lanolin seriousness. Granny Smith apples in the ending.
Flagstone Cinsault Rosé 2017
Gerhard Swart is the Winemaker at Flagstone, the winery in Somerset West. His Flagstone Poetry Cinsault Rosé 2017 is bottled in a clear bottle which shows it wonderful appetising bright cherry blossom pink. It’s all sappy juice making spicy cherries and berries and chunky watermelon. While crisp, dry and refreshing, it has a soft fruity ending. A classic summer wine for seafood, ceviche and crisp leaf salads.
Janno Briers Louw is a Cape Wine Master and makes his wines on the family Estate Eenzaamheid. His Cuvée 2015 is a blend of Shiraz, Pinotage, Mourvèdre, Cinsaut and Grenache Noir. Matured in 300 litre barrels, the wine is an eclectic blend resulting in in a richly coloured core and garnet edges. Black cherries, roadside brambles, mulberries blend with sweet ripe bloodplums. Boldly built, the fruit in the tail is well interwoven with the oak, the gentle acidity and the cashmere clad tannins.
Rustenberg Straw Wine 2017
Traditionally made by desiccating grapes on straw mats in the sunshine. The residual sugar levels, and fortunately the acid levels are high and fermentation is not easy. Here we have Chenin Blanc and Viognier, raisins, honey, sun dried peaches, a rich sweetness and almost oily deliciousness. Murray Barlow, the family Cellarmaster, trained in Australia and is a Diners Club Junior Winemaker of the year. As good with a smooth chicken or duck paté at the beginning of a meal as with a dessert at the end.
